Reflective Equine Assisted Learning

We offer training events utilising our horses to teach groups and individuals to improve their communication skills, build on their strengths, identify obstacles to effective collaboration and work on areas of communication that they wish to develop. The training consists of a one - day intensive and experiential learning opportunity, facilitated by Louise Gillard-Owen, RGN, D/N Cert, Dip. Person Centred Counselling, Dip Addiction Studies and Sally Baker, BHSAI.

You do not have to have ridden horses before, but you will be asked to identify your own goals for the day with the horse that you are allocated.

How Does it Work?

The name of our organisation probably gives you a big clue. The word REFLECTIVE may conjure up associations with mirrors and this is exactly what the horses provide us with; an accurate reflection of our way of communicating. This provides us with another opportunity to develop and learn about ourselves, through REFLECTING on what happened in a session, what was significant, what this means to us and the way we communicate.

We call the organisation REAL because being ‘real’ is what it’s all about so that we can access the issues that may be causing problems or obstacles to our development as individuals or teams.

The training team consists of Sally, in her role as ‘horse specialist’, Louise, as the ‘human facilitator’, and our own horses selected especially for their roles as learning facilitators.

Horses are herd animals and as such rely on fast and transparent communication between them to remain safe. As a result they display immediate behaviour, verbal, (in the horse sense!) and non-verbal, in response to humans or any other animal. You, of course, display the same behaviour, - often without being aware of it - and the ‘conversation’ between horse and human offers real insight into how we operate and what drives our behaviour. We use observation as a tool to help you identify what is going on for you as an individual and as a member of a team as you pursue the set task. Sally observes the horse’s behaviour and Louise observes the human behaviour, offering you our observations at appropriate moments. Following the equine sessions, we have reflection sessions where identified issues, successes and problems are clarified, giving you the opportunity to decide how to address these most effectively.

We offer three different goal oriented training and development days:

  • Groundwork Day
  • Working with new challenges
  • Positive Progress
